Lip size is affected by genetics and loss of collagen. The lip thinning process can begin as early as age 25 and becomes noticeably thinner in the 30s and 40s. This is due to the natural aging process where collagen in the lips decline, leaving the lips thinner.
For those with genetically thinner lips, the appearance of a “disappearing lip” becomes an even greater concern with age, which causes them to look older than they really are.
Fortunately, there are solutions that help us achieve plumper and fuller lips naturally, such as LipLase™.
For those who wish to restore a more youthful pout but aren’t a fan of fillers, LipLase provides a safe, natural, and long lasting alternative to lip fillers.
Fotona LipLase therapy utilises Fotona’s Erbium:YAG laser to stimulate new collagen production in the lips. Through carefully customised passes, optical energy is transmitted in single sub-second long pulse sequences to avoid heat. In 6-7 pulses, surface tissue in the lips triggers new collagen production, resulting in plumper and fuller lips. Patients who wish to have deeper collagen stimulation can benefit from the laser’s PIANO mode, where treatment is done intra-orally on the mucosal lining of the lips. This reaches deeper skin tissues and is painless.
Lip plumping by LipLase™ happens in three stages:
The whole treatment is fast and comfortable, taking about 20 minutes. While patients can see a significant improvement immediately after leaving the room, the results will continue to improve after the prescribed number of sessions.

How does lip laser compare to lip fillers?
Unlike lip fillers, Fotona LipLase is a non-intrusive procedure that does not require the use of needles. Think of it as an alternative to injectables. Lip fillers also involve injecting a solution (usually hyaluronic acid) into your lips. While results are instantaneous, the filler will break down over time and is metabolised by the body. In comparison, Fotona LipLase plumps lips naturally by encouraging the body to stimulate collagen production. Results also occur more gradually over a course of 4-6 months and patients will notice their lips appearing softer and plumper.
How many sessions are needed?
As LipLase treatment promotes natural collagen production, it is therefore dependent on your body’s ability to produce collagen. Results may differ across individuals. However, patients usually can see a difference after the first session; for optimal results, at least 3 sessions spaced 2 weeks apart and another 3 sessions spaced one month apart are recommended. Results last up to 12 months.
What are the risks and side effects to LipLase laser?
Fotona LipLase is a safe procedure with minimal to no side effects. The treatment is virtually painless with no anaesthesia or numbing agents required. At most, you may feel some warmth all over your lips due to the laser energy, but it will be gone after the treatment.
Will LipLase affect any of my lip sensations?
No, LipLase does not have any side effects that could trigger loss of sensation in your lips.
What is the downtime for LipLase laser?
There is no downtime and patients are able to resume their daily activities immediately after. Immediately after, the lips will appear swollen but this should subside within a few fours. There will be some superficial peeling on the 2nd day. As part of the aftercare, patients are advised to use SPF 50 lip balm and avoid wearing lipstick for the next 24 hours.
What results can I expect?
LipLase is a personalised laser treatment so results may vary across individuals. It has the ability to hydrate and plump the lips by stimulating collagen production, defining the cupid's bow, smoothen wrinkles around the lips and mouth and lighten lip colour to a pinkish tone.
