ABOUT
What keeps the skin supple and young is its natural ability to produce collagen and hyaluronic acid. As we age, the skin loses volume and elasticity, resulting in unbalanced facial contours. You may start noticing signs of facial volume loss such as flatter cheeks (cheeks that look deflated), thinner lips or undereye hollows.
Dermal fillers are injectable gels made up of hyaluronic acid that work to restore volume to sunken areas of the face, caused by ageing. They can also be used improve facial contours and enhance facial features, lift drooping skin and smoothen fine lines and wrinkles. In addition to filling in the hollow areas of the face, dermal fillers stimulate collagen production from hyaluronic acid, resulting in improvement of the skin’s elasticity. Some popular uses of fillers in Singapore include sculpting a more defined nose bridge with nose fillers, and filling up nasolabial folds (laugh lines).
HOW IT WORKS
Dermal filler injections work by drawing and fusing water molecules together resulting in the skin’s volume restoration. It does this by filling the volume loss which improves folds and wrinkles as well as attracting water to replenish skin moisture.
At Veritas, a wide range of temporary and semi-permanent fillers are used for customised treatments according to the patient’s needs.
From time to time, we see patients at our clinic who seek help for the removal of unsatisfactory fillers. While fillers do dissolve naturally over time, fillers can last up to years, with varying duration depending on the area where the filler was injected, the volume of filler injected, and the brand and class of dermal filler used. In general, the cheek fillers and jawline fillers last longer compared to areas such as the lips where there is more movement from talking and eating.
How long fillers take to dissolve would also depend on the individual’s metabolism. Typically, fillers dissolve naturally faster in men due to their higher muscle mass, and higher metabolic rate which breaks down the filler compound faster than women.
Hyaluronidase is an enzyme used to dissolve hyaluronic acid, a primary ingredient in many dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, Teosyal and Belotero. Hyaluronidase is injected into the targeted area, with most of the dissolving effect taking place within 24 hours and the full effect taking place within a few days. At Veritas, Hyaluronidase is diluted with local anaesthetic to minimize discomfort for our patients, and can be performed effectively within a single session. In cases where there are larger volumes of dermal fillers to be removed, a second session may be required to dissolve the filler completely.
To prevent filler complications and avoid the need for filler removal, it is crucial to select an experienced filler provider with good understanding of the facial anatomy and a keen eye for aesthetic to determine the proportions and artistry involved in placing the fillers. Effective communication with your provider, asking for before and after photos during your consultation, as well as asking referrals from peers you know who have had good filler jobs done are ways that can help patients with selecting a filler provider that is right for them.
