What are Scalp Conditions?
Scalp conditions can affect either the hair or the scalp, or both. It is a unique area of skin which contains a high density of hair follicles and oil glands that can be infected or inflamed. When this happens, you may experience rash, itch, flakiness, tenderness, or even hair loss over your scalp.
Some scalp conditions are:
Dandruff | Widespread flaking of scalp skin |
Seborrheic dermatitis | Oily, itchy, thickened skin that can be inflamed and red, possibly accompanied by hair loss |
Psoriasis | Well-defined thickened red patches with silvery scales |
Tinea capitis | Fungal infection causing itchy red patches. Hair loss may develop |
Lichen simplex | Well-defined, hardened, intensely itchy plaques, usually found at the back of the scalp |
Folliculitis | Widespread small red bumps containing pus that can be itchy or painful |
