ROSACEA

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory facial skin disorder that causes visible blood vessels and is characterized by central face redness. It may produce small, red and pus-filled bumps on the skin. There are 4 types of rosacea, with the most common type (1) being facial redness/flushing. Variants have different presentations such as:

  • pimple-like facial skin lesions
Type 2 rosacea acne otherwise known as Papulopustular rosacea – sometimes confused with Acne redness
  • skin deformities
Type 3 rosacea is known as Rhinophyma. Rhinophyma is when the nose becomes swollen and takes on a bulbous appearance
  • eye symptoms
Type 4 or ocular rosacea, where the eyes look bloodshot and tearful, and vision may be affected.

WHAT CAUSES ROSACEA?

There is a strong genetic predisposition that causes rosacea, but some external causes are known to cause or worsen rosacea as well. These include dietary (such as spicy foods) as well as environmental triggers.

Symptoms of Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea include:

  • A flushed look and facial redness – Rosacea usually causes a persistent redness in the central part of your face. small blood vessels often swell thus causing redness.
  • pimple-like bumps on the face – Many people with rosacea develop pimples on their face that resemble acne rosacea. Your skin may feel tender and hot, along with redness.
  • visible blood vessels or “red-lines” known as telangiectasias
  • Eye problems – Many people with rosacea experience dry, irritated and swollen eyes coupled with redness. For some severe cases and flare ups, eye symptoms precede skin symptoms.
  • Enlarged nose – Rosacea can thicken the nose, causing the nose to appear bulbous

Rosacea is diagnosed clinically without the need for skin tests. Rosacea is a skin disease can be very troubling because of its cosmetic implications and also because of the discomfort facial flushing may bring about. Early treatment of rosacea can bring the condition under control but recurrence of disease may happen if there is poor control of lifestyle factors.

VARIOUS EVIDENCE BASED METHODS

THE VERITAS METHOD

Rosacea is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory skin disease that causes redness on the face so it needs a holistic treatment approach with a focus on prevention. However, only relying on oral antibiotics or skincare does not offer a treatment of the root cause of enlarged and prominent blood vessels – these are best treated with a proper vascular laser.

There are some treatment lasers that masquerade as vascular lasers such as the gold toning/q-switch/picosecond lasers. These devices frequently like to boast that they are capable of treating everything, but the truth is that these lasers are not useful to treat rosacea blood vessels, and can even create more unwanted blood vessels! Rosacea laser treatment usually gives results from the very first session, even though there can be temporary side effects of mild irritation and treatment redness for the first few minutes to hours after proper rosacea treatment. If you find your rosacea worsening after your skin therapies, please contact proper medical professionals for help.
