What is Hair Transplant via Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?

To put it simply, a hair transplant is a minor surgical procedure that moves hair follicular units, or grafts, from the back of the scalp to balding areas. It is a minimally invasive method that leaves no linear scar, therefore requiring no wound care and has a short social downtime of 5-7 days.

Done well, a hair transplant looks totally natural to onlookers and even your barbers. This requires a highly skilled team experienced in the artistry of selecting the right grafts for implantation with the most natural angle, direction and distribution.

Why Choose Veritas for your hair transplant?

Hair transplant is an intricate surgical procedure that requires a ton of teamwork. Dr CY Chua is internationally certified for the hair transplant procedure and makes all the key decisions on treatment parameters and hair transplant diagnosis. Having personally undergone a hairline and beard transplant, Dr Chua has a profound understanding of the psychological impact of hair loss on his patients. The team of technicians who assist the doctor also contribute significantly to the success of the hair transplant.

An experienced technician runs extremely rare – did you know that it takes more than 500 cases of hair transplant for the technician to perform the intricate art of handling grafts quickly and efficiently? Each graft is delicate. Once removed from the scalp, it dries out rapidly and loses its viability. Technicians require extreme dexterity gained through experience to avoid damaging the follicle.

Our chief hair transplant technician boosts over 10 years of experience with over 2,000 satisfied patients. Together with Dr CY Chua’s expertise and her experience, the team is well-versed in all the techniques needed for a natural-looking hair transplant with the highest graft survival rate.

What happens during the FUE hair transplant?

At Veritas, we are dedicated to giving you the most effective treatments with minimal discomfort.

The FUE procedure goes like this:

1. Anaesthetic and Extraction

The donor area is cleaned with an antiseptic solution and then numbed with anaesthetic before the surgeon begins extracting the hair follicles.

Each hair follicle is extracted individually from the donor area with a pen and then stored in a special solution that preserves them for implantation.

2. Hair graft inspection

Every individual hair graft will be examined under a microscope and we will use only the best and most suitable hair grafts. This ensures the quality and survivability of the hair grafts

3. Planning and Implantation

After inspection and selection of the hair grafts, the Doctor will plan how to nest position the grafts such that the appearance of the transplant is as natural as possible. We will consider factors such as the angle, direction and distribution of the grafts. When the distribution plan has been decided, the hair grafts are then implanted onto the balding areas.

4. Recovery

After the hair transplant surgery, you may have some swelling at the donor area and across the forehead for a few days. Your doctor will provide you with aftercare advice to ensure the success of your hair transplant.

FAQs

FUE hair transplant is the only permanent hair loss method that leaves you with hair that can regrow naturally. No other method allows for hair growth on areas that are already bald.

Studies have shown that 90% of the transplanted grafts survive and grow in the recipient site. When performed well, a hair transplant is a procedure with an exceptionally high success rate.

Many patients experience good regrowth and coverage in just a few months, but the full results may take up to a year to show after the procedure. We offer a range of treatments at Veritas to ensure a quick and successful recovery for your hair transplant.

You should consider a hair transplant surgery if you are over the age of 30 and have tried other medications before. It is also recommended for those whose hair loss has progressed beyond class 3 or above on the Norwood Scale, as long as the hair loss pattern has stabilised.

The risks of a hair transplant in Singapore are few and far between. They include infections, inflammation, and pain, all of which can be avoided completely if the post-procedure care is followed by the patient.

FUE will allow for more comfort during recovery. However, you are likely to feel some pain and there might be slight swelling. We may prescribe:

  • Pain medications
  • Antibiotics to prevent any infections
  • Anti-inflammatories
  • Medications that can stimulate hair growth

We advise that you avoid heavy physical activity for the first 3 days post-procedure, and to avoid chlorinated pools and saunas for 2 months.

After 5-7 days, the transplanted hair would have grown out to cover up any punch marks left during the FUE procedure. Do not worry if some of the hairs fall out – this is completely normal. For a few rare cases, there is some textual change in the transplanted hair. This phenomenon is temporary and resolves with the normal hair growth cycle in 12 to 18 months.

A typical FUE hair transplant can cost from $6,000 to $15,000, depending on:

  • The condition of your hair loss
  • Number of hair grafts needed
  • Survival rate of your hair grafts
  • Procedure chosen (manual/ARTAS)
  • Area of transplant (Head/Eyebrow/Beard)

At Veritas, FUE hair transplant starts at S$5 per graft.
