What is Ellansé?

Ellansé is a collagen-stimulating dermal filler that allows our body to naturally absorb collagen. It is designed for individuals who lack skin elasticity and firmness. Ellansé reverses the effects of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles and improves overall skin quality. Once injected, Ellansé lifts depressed areas of skin with long lasting effect due to collagen production.

Unlike traditional fillers which contain hyaluronic acid, Ellansé is primarily made up of 30% biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) microspheres and 70% carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) gel carrier.

How Does Ellansé Work?

Collagen, a protein produced by the body, is the main building block that maintains our skin’s architecture, firmness and elasticity. However, collagen production in our body decreases at a steady rate of 1.5% annually once we hit our 20’s. What Ellansé does is to stimulate collagen production in the dermal tissues to reverse the ageing process. The more collagen present, the stronger skin architecture is.

Ellansé works to reverse the effects of ageing through a 2-step process:

1. Immediate restoration of volume

Once injected, the CMC gel carrier fills volume-lacking areas of the face immediately. Effects last for about 12 weeks.

2. Long-lasting volumisation

The PCL microspheres work at the same time to stimulate Type I collagen, the main type of collagen found in skin. This creates a long lasting volumisation effect of up to 3 years, depending on the type of Ellansé used.

  1. Ellansé S: At least 18 months
  2. Ellansé M: At least 2 years
  3. Ellansé L: At least 3 years

The difference in longevity is due to the number of PCL molecules present. The longer the PCL molecule chain, the longer the results of Ellansé.

Overall, Ellansé fillers last longer and act faster than traditional hyaluronic acid-based fillers as hyaluronic acid stimulates collagen production subtly over a period of 2-3 months and breaks down after 6 to 18 months.

FAQs

In Singapore, the most common collagen stimulators are Radiesse, Sculptra and Ellansé. Ellansé is often compared to Sculptra.

Ellansé takes effect immediately, while lasting over 2 years, and requires only an one-off treatment instead of several sessions. There is no need to massage the treated area after treatment as well.

Ellansé is CE certified, which means it has met all safety and health requirements set by the European Union. It is classified as a Class III medical device and is backed up by several clinical studies. Its ingredients, CMC and PCL, are also recognised as Generally Recognised As Safe (GRAS) substances.

Ellansé is generally suitable for most adults with dry and aged skin looking to reduce their fine lines and wrinkles. However, it is not recommended for individuals in the following groups:

  • Have severe allergies
  • Are sensitive to any of the components found in Ellansé
  • Have acute or chronic skin diseases
  • Have a history of autoimmune disorders
  • Are susceptible to keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring
  • Are undergoing cortisone treatment
  • Have active sepsis or infection

Ellansé can treat most areas of the upper face, mid face and lower face. It is also suitable for adding volume to the nose and chin. It is less commonly used on thinner areas such as the eyes, eyelids and under the eyes as these areas may cause lumps when collagen production is stimulated and therefore requires a lot of skill and technique.

Dr Chua Cheng Yu is an official trainer for Ellansé and highly skilled at administering Ellansé around the eye area, including eye lids and under eye, without any lumps.

Depending on the type of Ellansé used, results can last from 1-3 years. The difference in longevity lies on the number of PCL molecules the type of Ellansé contains. The longer the PCL chain, the longer the effects.

During the consultation, you are free to share your concerns and desired results with the doctor. He/she will then recommend the most suitable type of Ellansé for you.

During the treatment, the doctor will mark out the injection sites and clean those areas with antiseptic. Then, a numbing cream is applied. Once the numbing kicks in, the doctor will inject small amounts of Ellansé under your skin using a fine needle. To ensure even distribution of Ellansé, your doctor may massage the area post-injection gently.

Only one treatment session is required. Each session will take about 30-45 minutes. Patients are advised to remove all makeup before treatment.

Common side effects of Ellansé include:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Soreness
  • Localised redness

These side effects are normal and temporary and will subside after a few days. Medication may be prescribed to help with the swelling and discomfort. Rare but more serious side effects include:

  • Infection
  • Lumps
  • Secondary oedema
  • Pain at injection site

Dr. Chua Cheng Yu is an official regional trainer for Ellansé. He is highly skilled and experienced in administering Ellansé to maximise its results and longevity. Dr Chua has a unique technique that involves using Ellansé to lift upper eyelids and restore volume for under eye areas without lumps – a skill highly sought after by his patients.
