What Is It?

After the age of 30, muscle mass can deteriorate as much as 3-8% per decade, especially among inactive individuals. Apart from strength and resistance training, there is another way to avoid or reverse this process.

TruSculpt Flex is a FDA-cleared muscle-sculpting device that uses Bio-Electrical Muscle Stimulation (BEMS) to send electrical impulses to muscle nerves. This stimulation mimics action initiated by the nervous system, causing muscles to contract. BEMS can strengthen muscles, increase range of motion, and offset the effects of muscle atrophy. It is commonly used for muscle rehabilitation following injury and in sports medicine, where muscle stimulation devices are often used to improve performance when training, warming up or recovering from injury.

TruSculpt Flex is commonly used for strengthening and toning abdominal muscles, developing a firmer abdomen and strengthening, toning and firming the buttocks and thighs.

How Does It Work?

During traditional strength training, the brain sends signals to the nervous system and motor neurons to contract skeletal muscle. During a TruSculpt Flex treatment, the process skips the brain and instead goes straight to handpieces placed on the body via an electrical signal. This action involuntarily contracts the skeletal muscles under the handpiece, and the entire muscle group is engaged as a result.

Similar to strength training, muscle fibres undergo trauma or microscopic tears during a TruSculpt Flex treatment. Cells then attempt to repair the damage caused, resulting in muscle growth and strength. This repair process, known as hypertrophy, is triggered after each treatment and involves the release of hormones such as testosterone to active cell recovery, repair muscle fibres and form new blood capillaries.

What Is The Trusculpt Flex Difference?

The TruSculpt Flex device is pre-programmed with three different modes:

  • Prep, which creates a twisting motion to warm up, stretch the muscles and build up tolerance to incoming muscle contractions
  • Tone, which contracts muscle, holds them up to the point of exhaustion and then relaxes them to increase muscle strength and enhance muscular endurance
  • Sculpt, where deep sequential contractions of muscle are engaged to build muscle mass and increase metabolic rate

Each mode offers five different contraction sequences to stimulate a traditional workout at an accelerated intensity to ensure progressive overload. This stimulation constantly challenges the muscles at an intensity and duration that’s higher than regular exercise. For example, a typical abdominal workout may include up to ten minutes of various movements and may include the assistance of other muscle groups. The TruSculpt Flex, however, allows for selective targeting of muscle groups and motor neurons for 45 minutes. A 45-minute TruSculpt Flex treatment is the equivalent of 54,000 crunches.

Other muscle stimulation devices are limited to stimulating only 1-2 muscle groups at one time in a single linear direction, but TruSculpt Flex can stimulate up to 8 muscle groups at the same time and at different intensities.

How soon can I see results?

Building muscle takes time. In traditional resistance training, it can take anywhere from 4-16 weeks to see visible differences. While there may be immediate swelling of the muscles as well as microscopic level changes after a TruSculpt Flex treatment, observable results will take some time. There are many factors involved in the process of muscle hypertrophy, such as age, sex, diet, current fitness level, genetics, amount of adipose tissue on top of the muscle, diet and rest.

As such, some individuals might see results faster than others. It is recommended to do 2 treatments a week over a course of 6-12 weeks for optimal results.

Will I experience muscle soreness after a treatment?

Due to the aerobic nature of a TruSculpt Flex treatment, lactic acid buildup does not occur. However, delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS, can occur. This soreness comes from inflammation and micro-trauma to the muscle, which lasts from 24-72 hours and subsides on its own.

Who is a suitable candidate for this treatment?

Patients with a cardiac pacemaker, myocardial arrhythmia, swollen or inflamed skin or cancer are not suitable candidates for this treatment. The same goes for pregnant patients, patients with any metal implants, skin abnormality, history of seizure disorder or epilepsy, and patients who have undergone cancer treatment three months prior.

Do I need to be on a special diet?

After a TruSculpt Flex treatment session, protein synthesis occurs for 24-48 hours; and after a series of 4-6 treatments, the body goes into a state of constant protein synthesis.

Muscle protein synthesis is the process of your body repairing and rebuilding damage muscle fibers. It is stimulated by the presence of amino acids, which are derived from external sources of proteins like eggs, milk, and other plant and animal sources. To optimise muscle hypertrophy, it is recommended to eat 1-2.2 grams of protein per pound of body weight.
