INTRODUCTION

Active Acne & Oily Skin

Almost everyone experiences some degree of acne during their teenage years, due to the hormonal changes of going through puberty.

Acne comes in different forms, ranging from small comedones (blackheads/whiteheads), to medium papules/pustules and large nodules/cysts.

Other than the face, acne can appear on other parts of the body, such as the chest and back.

CAUSES

What Causes Acne?

Acne develops when skin pores become clogged by a buildup of dead skin cells. Under normal conditions, skin cells shed naturally as part of the skin’s renewal process, rising to the surface of the skin when they die.

However, when the body produces excessive sebum, the dead skin cells can stick together inside the pore. This causes the dead skin cells to be trapped within the pore, causing a hotbed for bacteria to grow and multiply. Inflammation can occur as a result, and cause acne.

Adult Acne

There are misconceptions that acne is a teenage problem. In fact, acne affects people of all ages and sexes. Adult acne refers to refers to acne that persists after age 25 or manifests for the first time in adulthood. For some with existing acne, acne problem can even worsen in their adulthood. Recent studies have shown an increase prevalence of adult acne, with up to 80% of acne cases persistent beyond puberty. Majority of those affected by adult acne are women, and 20% of affected women develop postinflammatory hyperpigmentation and scars from it.

Because acne not just results in painful and irritating bumps but also long term effects in terms of pigmentation (red or brown marks) and scarring (depressed scars), it has even been shown that up to 52% of acne sufferers are affected with psychological stress.

If you are one of them, fret not. At Veritas, we have helped many patients walk through their journey in treating acne and maintaining acne free skin. Early acne treatments can save you the stress, time and effort from having to deal with the post-inflammatory scars.

Severe or inflammatory acne that is left untreated can leave permanent scars on the skin. For individuals with cystic acne, the risk for developing scarring is increased. Getting early treatment for acne is essential in preventing scarring.

EVIDENCE-BASED METHODS

Recommended Acne Treatments in Singapore

AGNES is a permanent solution for all types of acne. AGNES treatment targets the root cause of acne, by selectively treating problematic pores (also known as selective sebaceous gland destruction). This is done without injury to the surface skin and provides a permanent solution to recurring acne by targeting the root of the problem.

The BLEND laser protocol is a combination laser session that can control sebum production, kill acne causing bacteria as well as fade acne scars.

Inflammatory acne can be controlled using other rejuvenation and resurfacing lasers.

The HydroPeel facial can clear comedonal acne, clogged pores and coloured scars, without any downtime, with the added benefit of hydrating the skin simultaneously.

Oral and topical acne medication are sometimes still needed to control acne. Consult our doctors to make sure you are using the right type of medications (there are many types!) and using them correctly.
