INTRODUCTION

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is the dimpled appearance of the skin and fat areas that some people have on their hips, thighs, and buttocks. There are different grades of cellulite appearance, and is much more common in women than in men because of differences in the way fat cells, muscle, and connective tissue are distributed in men’s and women’s skin. Fat deposits exert pressure on the connective tissues beneath skin and cause the lumpy appearance.

Cellulite is commonly known as “cottage cheese skin” or “orange-peel” skin. Cellulite tends to affect women far more commonly than men. Almost 80 to 90 percent of women will experience cellulite at some point in their lives.

Hormone changes
Hormones tend to affect the development of cellulite. Hormones such as estrogen, insulin and noradrenaline all factor into cellulite accumulating.

Genetic factors
Some people can be genetically predisposed towards development of cellulite. A person’s metabolic rate, the places where they deposit fat, and circulatory levels are all linked to their genetics.

Diet
In general, a healthy diet will help to stave off the development of cellulite.

EVIDENCE-BASED METHODS

Recommended treatments

Various fat and skin firming treatments can effectively treat and maintain a cellulite free appearance. Of which, heating (Endymed 3DEEP and Ultraformer 3 HIFU) and Acoustic Shockwave treatments are most effective in reducing underlying fat deposits, as well as firming the connective tissue underneath and in the skin layers.

The LDM BioHeal can tighten and renew skin with a zero-damage mechanism- making it popular for a no-downtime yet dramatically effective treatment.

Various types of threads and collagen stimulating injectables can give single session dramatic improvement over concerned areas, especially in combination with subcision. This is especially since cellulite dimples stubbornly affect deep skin layers. By directly injecting in those layers, results are both immediate and long lasting and should be considered by those who want faster results.

Topical skincare may alleviate the appearance of cellulite, but the effects are usually short-lived.
