What is this treatment?

Are your under-eye circles making you look old and tired? The reason behind this common problem is the fact that the skin around this area is aging. Aging will only make it thinner due to collagen depletion, which enhances the appearance of blood vessels beneath the eyes, making them appear darker. Aging also causes dark spots and fine lines to show in that area. Some individuals are also genetically predisposed to this problem, while it could be a result of medications, fatigue, or allergies in others.

The BrightEye Combination laser targets all components that can cause dark circles, giving maximal benefit to the patient in a single session without the use of injections or numbing. It makes use of various Long Pulse lasers (such as Yellow/VERSA3) as well as a Picosecond laser to target different skin components.

Dark Eye circles are extremely difficult to treat conditions and we see many patients who come to us having failed usual single laser treatment from elsewhere. The key toward successful treatment is proper combination equipment and expertise around this delicate eye area.

Dark Eye Circle causes:

  • Combination of causes including blood vessel congestion (vascular congestion) and pigmentation or structural – this is the vast majority of cases up to 80%!
  • Blood vessel congestion alone – still second most common cause alone
  • Structural causes include wrinkles, hollow undereye or bulky lower eyelids – but not everyone needs a filler or injection- some lasers can help (see SmoothEye)
  • Pigmented dark eye circles – very rare as a standalone cause

Why do most treatments fail? We see a lot of cases with wrong diagnosis and fillers offered even when it is a case of vascular congestion. This is because most people only know how to use fillers, but do not have the proper equipment to treat vascular congestion. Puting fillers (which are a TRANSPARENT material) will NOT help conceal the vascular congestion!

How do you tell which cause is which, and how do you know if you have vascular congestion?

  • Pigmented dark eye circles show up like brown spots (similar to freckles)
  • Structural causes means you can see hollows or protrusions causing shadows on the face.
  • Vascular congestion shows up as a reddish/bluish/purplish discoloration, totally unlike the two above. Remember that this is the most common single cause, so if you find that you have this, you’re not alone. Just don’t do fillers for this problem!

How does it work?

Dark eye circles have a combination of causes, with a recent clinical study showing that more than 80% of dark eye circles in one population had vascular congestion combined with another cause. Most people will need vascular lasers to treat part of the problem, in combination with other pigmentation lasers. However, this part is very important: not every vascular laser will help with dark circles! The bright yellow vascular laser does NOT help with dark eye circles because these lasers (such as the Pro Yellow or Dual Yellow) only target surface blood vessels, which is unlike the deep and large vessels that cause dark circle formation. Usually, longer wavelength long pulse lasers like the YAG or Diode lasers are required. If you have done Dual Yellow lasers for your dark eye circles and never had any effect, you now know why.

Now that you understand that there are DIFFERENT types of vascular lasers, it might interest you also that there are also:

  • Various pigmentation lasers, including picosecond, nanosecond and long pulse options
  • Lasers that can correct structural deformities such as tear troughs and eyebags! – these are discussed more under the SmoothEye treatment

Basically, this BrightEye combination laser treatment will treat all the different causes of dark eye circles.

Why the BrightEye treatment instead of other lasers?

If you were one of the 80% who had a combination of causes causing dark eye circles, you would probably want this combination treatment.

  • Targets the deep vessels that most people ignore or fail to conceal with fillers
  • Improves the appearance of the periorbital area
  • Smoothens the skin
  • Makes you look more refreshed
  • The combination treatment targets the problem at different layers

FAQs

We approach the problem by first looking at the multifactorial reason behind it. The combination laser approach ensures each cause is tackled separately and synergistically. We carefully chose the different lasers to ensure that they best complement each other. With properly administered treatment, the results will be long-lasting as well as cost-saving in the long run.

The decision to address this problem by using a combination of treatments reflects our experience and versatility with various products and devices in the aesthetic field. As mentioned, this condition has many contributing factors and a single solution might not be enough to achieve the best possible results. We individualize our treatment plans based on the specific needs and concerns of the client.

The number of sessions will depend on the severity of the problem and how you are responding to the treatment. We individualize our approach in every case to ensure that we address your specific needs. This is why we encourage you to come in for a personal consultation so that you can be evaluated extensively. Only then can we give you an estimate of the number of sessions needed.

The combination of treatments generally doesn’t cause significant discomfort. For example, the picosecond laser feels like gentle taps on the skin, while the VERSA3 vascular laser feels like a warm heating sensation.

Yes, the results of this combination treatment are long-lasting. We may not be able to control the progression of aging, but the treatment can improve the appearance of your perioribital area even as you age. You can always come back for touch-up treatments if you wish to maintain the results.

This combination laser has no downtime. There is a slight darkening of the treatment area that clears up within the day. The slight darkening shows the absorption of the laser energy needed to remove the dark eye circles.

As far as the laser treatments go, there have been no reported side effects. The mild darkening of the pigments or vascular congestion demonstrates the absorption of the laser energy needed to treat the area effectively. This will lighten in due time.

As the most delicate area of the face, the skin around the eye deserves the best treatment. You will be in a good position to achieve superior results when the treatment is backed by a strong knowledge of the physiologic changes involved, as well as their corresponding treatments. We emphasise the importance of having a meticulous eye for detail and the critical thinking on how best to address the problem through a multifactorial approach, in which our doctors have extensive experience.

We use a combination treatment because of the obvious fact that correcting only one aspect does not produce optimal results. In so doing, we continue to provide the best value for the time that our patients set aside for us.

The total cost may vary for each patient because this will depend on the severity of each patient’s condition and the area affected. Please bear in mind that we customize our approach for each patient, which means that the components of your combination treatment may not necessarily be the same as the next person’s treatment. We suggest that you come in for a personal consultation so that our doctors can thoroughly assess your condition and map out a specific treatment plan and its corresponding quotation.
