Aging

Aging is an inevitable aspect of our lives. But did you know that there are two different types of aging?

  • Intrinsic aging
This is what we commonly know as aging or growing old. The rate that we age or begin to look old is intrinsically dependent on our genetics. That is why some people can look like they are in their thirties when they are actually in their fifties.
  • Extrinsic aging
Extrinsic aging is caused by external factors. These can be factors like environment, diet and exposure to UV rays from sunlight.

What happens when we grow older?

As we age, the fibroblasts in our dermis lose their ability to produce collagen and elastin, that keeps the skin strong, taut and healthy looking. Our skin cells also naturally produce hyaluronic acid, which is a sugar complex that maintains skin hydration. Aging fibroblasts also produce an enzyme known as matrix metalloproteinase (MMP). This enzyme serves to denature and degrade collagen and elastin. As such, skin laxity is very compromised and will result in saggy skin and/or wrinkles.

Result:

  • Dry and inelastic skin
  • Wrinkles
  • Skin pigmentation

At a deeper layer, ligaments and connective tissue goes through the same degradation process – firm contours of the face and body can sag and result in unevenness and droopiness.

Result:

  • Bulky and Saggy Cheeks

Lastly, the loss of youthful fat and bony areas that happen with aging can cause sunken areas to show up. Common areas include the forehead and eye contours. Drastic changes of weight can also worsen this process.

Result:

  • Sunken or Face Contours

The Veritas Method

Treatment of the aging process is one of the most interesting and gratifying work the clinic performs. There are generally many aspects of aging and targeting the largest aspect gives the most satisfaction to the patient.

A preventive approach is the most minimalist approach, which entails good lifestyle practices, proper use of skincare, as well as spaced out, but regular maintenance procedures. Neurotoxins are a huge pillar in the preventive approach, because small amounts of infrequent treatments with neurotoxins can yield many long term benefits.

An aggressive approach is sometimes needed for those with severe or prolonged aging issues. A choice between devices and injectables, or a combination of both, may be necessary depending on individual condition. In general, the aging process can be halted with infrequent follow up visits.
